July 11, 2023 marked the 20th anniversary of the initial release of Simeon Flick’s inaugural solo CD, Soliloquy, his acoustic-based debut. Soliloquy set a monolithic precedent for the exhibition of Flick’s prodigious multi-instrumentality, lyrical poignancy (the subjects ranged from Gen X homage, pondering endings, and the triumphs and travails of solitude and self-knowledge, to subtle contemplations of voyeuristic mental instability, working-class malaise, and the unrequited longing of courtly love), and ascendant vocal prowess across 8 stripped-down, visceral tracks that serendipitously found him in like-minded San Diego company during the city’s 2000s singer/songwriter boom. Flick has since traveled far and wide across a disparate sonic topography, having mostly left the mellower, more maudlin hills of Soliloquy’s acoustic folk rock behind in favor of the aggressive, technical, electrified, and rhythmically compelling mountains that hew truer to his genuine artistic identity. Nevertheless, Soliloquy stands the test of timelessness, and the record’s bold, folky, unabashedly stark earnestness set a common-thread precedent that runs through all his subsequent work.
