I don't know how to sleep at night When I know I've got a reason to fight I think about it too much; I can't disown The part of my mind that just cannot condone Most times I cannot do much––except just to say That ain't right Hey now, that ain't right Make something funny out of serious plight That ain't right, hey now that ain't right I know you're fighting pyrrhic wars of your own Against a phalanx of circumstances that you cannot control Most times you know you cannot do much With no kindness coming through in the clutch You just have to say That ain't right

Sequester 03:48
Trapped in a corner You say I laid the paint myself Been called a loner And you say it's been bad for my health I might look a goner Might look like I should solicit help But I'll keep my honor And you stay inside your self-righteous cell I'll tell you this one time Don't need no one's help I'll tell you this one time I do things myself Some folks are shunners Others can't stand time to themselves Some are tail gunners Others are clueless at the helm You think I'm a runner You think it's bad to bite your hand But I'd rather sequester I'd rather sequester than go back I told you the first time Don't need no one's help I told you the first time I do things myself Some rightly beg and plead in their time of need But you won't get that satisfaction from me No way I told you the first time I do things myself I'll tell you one last time As my life falls apart I chose to sequester and break my own heart
3.
There's a hole The size of god in a man's soul We want it all And don't you know it's never enough So we lie, cheat, and take like junkies And we die with hands clutching gold bricks In denial of plastic seas And we wonder why the earth's enraged We deserve a monsoon We deserve a typhoon We deserve to drown faster We deserve unnatural disaster The earth has a soul Try as we might, it can't be sold But we dig it up Because all that glitters is our oil and gold So the air in our eyes is funky And the hole in the sky is so big Things ignite with regularity Surprise surprise––the earth's irate We deserve a firestorm We deserve too warm We deserve to burn blacker We deserve unnatural disaster We're gonna die––there's no escape We've got drives we cannot sate We can try, but do we have what it takes Don't cry––she'll survive us anyway We tried to control Sucked dry all the oil But the earth has no master

Don't need a witchy woman No drama passion Got a breezy mama 'Cause easy is hard enough Don't need a wanton girlie Fill me with constant worry In a world that wants me buried Easy is hard enough Took a long time to gel, me Went through all kinds of hell, see To find out what I wanted Is not what I need Known a mess of ladies Drove me all kinds of crazy Though I love my maybes Easy is hard enough
5.
I've loved a lot and I've lost As much; I dwell on the cost Did I end up hurting Them more than they hurt me? Lovers and friends who are gone I still love despite the wrongs Haunted by those who I crossed And those who don't give a toss To all of those who call me enemy Nothing but love for ya To those who negatively changed my destiny Nothing but love for ya Some friends, once close, have moved on Some sold me out for a song To those whom I have appalled And those who drive me up the wall To all of those who call me enemy Nothing but love for ya To those who negatively changed my destiny Nothing but love for ya What if all I have is regret The aching memory of the ones I upset And the anger towards those who pushed my limits Nothing will heal it but to love despite it If you damned my stream before it reached the sea Nothing but love for ya If you drained my happiness capacity Nothing but love for ya
6.
I'm not impressed I'm turning back To what I was doing before Sound and fury Mean nothing Unless the end is coming After the fall We'll be who we are And leave behind guises We had on before After the fall We'll break through the wall And lay all our judgments down Can't you do better than that Crying wolf is old hat This world cannot stand Cannot last So much bad Too much bad has happened
7.
Sharp Suitor 03:27
On the hunt for you I've got to fake my condescension Got you in my queue But I'm a yen with no propulsion I'll give up the ruse Before I even break the start line Don't know how to schmooze I'm like a chicken with its head cut Yeah, I ain't no sharp shooter Yeah, I ain't no sharp suitor I couldn't woo her if I tried No love inside I'd come after you But I'm as picky as a dame coy Most of you won't do And yet I don't meet my own standards I envy your ennui You don't have to move a muscle Your power's your beauty And I wish I had it in me Some may think that it's uproarious The way I choose to hate the game But I never could be spurious: I'm irate that you're the keepers of the flame Yeah, I ain't no sharp shooter Yeah, I ain't no sharp suitor I couldn't woo her if I tried What if I tried?

What's the hurry Does something burn? Are you flurry For what you yearn? There is a concept That you can test Know when to take action And when to rest Know when to work relentlessly And when to let it sit Like a gator In a bayou mist Wait for the wader Then cyclone twist Save your manna For the big tests Know when to take action And when to rest Know when to work relentlessly And when to let it sit "Rest when you die" Will fill your grave Before it's time It's no prophecy Don't be a victim Of this mindset Know when to take action And when to rest Know when to work relentlessly And when to let it sit We work too hard We've got to slow down All we ever do is just do, do, do All I wanna do is just be, be, be

What if I'd done more than tried What if I"d talked less than I Listened that one vital time Wish I had kept that advice Shoulda coulda woulda What if I'd told those that I Loved, that I did one more time Before the final goodbye Wish I had shunned pantomime Shoulda Coulda Woulda I'm feeling guilty For what I have done I'm feeling guilty For what I've not done It all concerns the past and that's gone It all concerns the past and that's done Conscience raging How can I put it to rights Constant praying I did by somebody right What if I'd walked straighter lines What if I'd helped those that I Flat-out denied at the time Are sins of omission still crimes Shoulda coulda woulda

Flat champagne Pouring down the drain Party's over Trashed house remains Broken panes Sofas soaked and stained Yawns on the lawn at dawn Lights out or the glory gain There's something mucking the pool There's something stuck in the trees And wouldn't you know it–– Somebody's blown it Over the flat screen Sated ashtrays squirm And the wounded soldiers yearn To be finished in the land of the scot-free Flat champagne And bad hangover pain Sore bones and hormones And the walk of shame

Onus 04:49
I've got something on my mind Can you spare a little time And listen for a while It's weighing on me It's flaying me wide open And I sure could use some empathy Won't you help me with the onus My back is so bowed Where I shoulder the load My eyes are stone-dry From all the years I've cried I need relief If you just lend me your ear I swear I'll be brief Oh, I know you've got your own catastrophe But you've gotta see This is killing you as well as me Oh, I"m dying to break free I'm dying to make peace Oh, I've got something on my mind Since you'll spare a little time And listen for a while Lean in, I'll tell you...

about

Sub Rosa, Simeon Flick's 5th album, represents the continuing coalescing of the Alternative R&B Pop Rock sound toward which he had been striving since Reactive Soul. Still redolent with a singer-songwriter's frank, intimate, and poetic earnestness, and containing some of the most astounding vocal performances in Flick's oeuvre, Sub Rosa bristles with versatile intensity in its "under the rose" exploration of personal and universal subject matter (injustice, isolation, environmental decay, relationships of all kinds, and the end of everything, which never seems to actually arrive no matter how imminent it might feel), and clandestinely carries on with Flick's subtle musical and rhythmic innovations.

The cover art design, which was Flick's first foray into the visual representation of his work, is a power flower, a Gen-X reversal of a cornily untenable Baby Boomer phrase, a symbol of man's continuing encroachment on the environment from which he has long since detached himself, and an allegorical representation of the capitalistic co-opting of nature as a "brand."
